The S100 has been built from the ground up as a proper audio switch, not an off the shelf IT accessory the S100 puts priority on sound quality and data integrity, whereas IT put all the emphasis on speed and throughput. The S100/2 now has 6 ports rated at 1 Gigabit speeds and 2 ports at 100 Megabits optimised for audio devices. The new S100/2 will offer a dramatic upgrade in performance for those using Ethernet to move audio file around and it is not just for Melco owners, Linn, Naim, Lumin (the X1 uses Fibre Optic Ethernet) and general computer audio uses can benefit from what the S100/2 offers.
Internally, the S100/2 gains an improved power circuit board with a carefully selected AC adapter.
The S100/2 also retains the SFP (small form factor pluggable) connections seen in the original model, which allow upgrades to optical fibre connections with compatible devices, for even greater noise isolation and sonic performance.
The S10 is Melco’s flagship data switch and comprises a ‘head’ unit and a power unit, separating the sensitive data-carrying areas of the design from the power supply. The two-box approach echoes that of the N10/2 library, and offers the least compromise when it comes to ultimate sound quality.
The S10’s head unit is based on a heavily upgraded S100 network switch, and benefits from a greatly improved power management section, better aluminium casework and a rigid-steel screened chassis.
The rear panel connections include different-speed RJ45 Ethernet ports: 4x 100 MB and 4x 1 GB, plus 2x 1 GB SFP.
